A Massachusetts drivers license is valid for 5 years. To help you remember, the expiration date always falls on your birthday. There are several different ways to renew your license.
Visiting a Full Service RMV Center
There are several MA RMV full service centers throughout the state. Upon visiting, you are first checked in (to ensure that you brought proper paperwork), given an eye test, and then handed a number. Once your number is called, a representative will assist with your Massachusetts drivers license renewal. An updated picture will be taken. A temporary license will be handed to you, with the final one being sent in the mail afterwards.
Online Drivers License Renewals
You may be able to renew your driver’s license online if…
- You are under 75 years of age.
- You do not have any outstanding obligations such as unpaid parking tickets.
- You are not required to take an eye test.
- You have a credit card to pay the renewal fee.
- You meet certain other requirements.
To check whether you qualify, visit the MA RMV License Renewal page and enter your information.
Express Kiosks for Massachusetts Drivers License Renewals
There is a third convenient option for Massachusetts drivers license renewals. Express kiosks are available in a few locations. These kiosks allow you to take your own photo, pay by credit, and quickly complete your renewal. Similar to online renewals, you must be under age 75, not require an eye test, and not owe any money.
