If you are purchasing a new car or have an existing car and need to transfer registration from another state to Massachusetts, there are 3 simple steps to follow. This process may be different than in other states. Below is a quick guide on registering vehicles in Massachusetts.
1 – Get Massachusetts Auto Insurance
Auto insurance is a requirement in Massachusetts. You cannot register any vehicle without showing proof of insurance. Additionally, your insurance policy must have certain minimum coverages. Since Massachusetts has a competitive rate system, it is helpful to obtain quotes from multiple companies. Better yet, contact an independent insurance agent and they will do the leg work for you! Once you select an insurance company and have a policy, you can move on to the next step of registering your vehicle.
2 – Register Vehicles with the RMW
Fill out an Application for Registration and Title. This can be downloaded from the RMV website or picked up in-person at any full service RMV center. Your insurance agency may also have copies available. Your insurance agent will actually need to sign and stamp this form, verifying that you have insurance.
Read the form carefully for a list of other documentation required, such as your lien holder information and title. Bring all of the necessary paperwork to your local RMV center for processing. Once registered, you will receive a Vehicle Registration form to place in your glovebox, plates to place on the front and back of your vehicle, and a sticker for the upper right corner of your plate (indicating when your registration expires). There is only one more step to complete after this,..inspection.
3 – Get an Inspection
All vehicles in Massachusetts must be inspected annually. From the date of registration, you have 7 days to complete that inspection. Inspection centers are conveniently located throughout the state. Click here to search for a location near you.
Inspections cover safety and emissions requirements. If for some reason you fail the inspection, you will be given a temporary “fail” sticker. You must complete repairs and have your vehicle re-inspected within 60 days.
