Your home is probably your most valuable investment,.. both the property itself and all of your belongings within it. You should always be concerned about keeping your home safe. Crimes occur in all types of neighborhoods. Getting too lax with your safety can leave you susceptible to burglary. Here are a few Massachusetts home safety tips to keep in mind to prevent your home from being an easy target.
Lock Doors and Windows
There’s nothing a burglar likes more than easy access to your home. Even if you live in a safe neighborhood, it is a good idea to keep your windows and doors locked, especially at night or when you are away from home.
Don’t Leave Hidden Keys
Hidden keys are never as “hidden” as you may think. Burglars know to look in all of the typical areas: under door mats, near light fixtures, etc. The rocks disguised as key holders don’t quite get past them either since they tend to look artificial. Your best bet is not to leave extra keys laying around unless it is inside a lockbox with a code of some sort. Even then, it’s best not to leave those lock boxes in plain sight.
Close Blinds/Curtains
At night, open blinds allow people to see right into your home! They can see the flat screen t.v. on your wall, electronic equipment, valuable paintings, etc. Potential burglars can simply drive by and mark you as a future target. Try and keep your blinds closed at night, particularly in rooms visible from the street or with valuable items.
Prepare for Being Away
If you intend to be away for a period of time, take some extra precautions. Set automatic timers for your lights so your home won’t appear vacant during evening hours. Turn down your telephone ringer so any incessant ringing won’t be an obvious sign that you’re not there. Don’t advertise on social media that you’re out of town and that your home is left unattended.
